Who says that sanitation is an alien concept to us?
Leaving your footwear on the neighbor's doormat shows respect to your host. But in a more practical sense, you're being considerate of your neighbor's efforts in maintaining a clean place. By nature we are a hospitable bunch but the cardinal rule in entering a Filipino house is to remove your sandals, step-ins, shoes, or what-have-you. Break that rule and you will not be welcome.
This has been ingrained in us for so long. It is much like the way we dip our fingers on a holywater basin without any holywater at all. It's like we're on autopilot.
